On 4 September, ENVI held an exchange of views on the EU emergency response actions to the recent outbreak of mpox in Africa. The Director of ECDC , Pamela Rendi-Wagner presented their rapid risk assessment of the EU and the latest epidemiological updates of the situation. Emer Cooke, the Executive Director of EMA outlined the mpox vaccine and viral treatments that have current market authorisations in the EU against the mpox virus and the process to extend the vaccine to adolescents. DG HERA, represented by their Chief Science Office, Wolfgang Philipp updated Members on the contract they signed on August 13 to procure 215,000 vaccines which they have agreed to donate to the African Centres for Disease Prevention and Control. In addition, they presented their role in emergency response coordination with EU Member States to the outbreak of mpox in Africa.
